This is a very well-known, native American plant which usually occurs as a large shrub or a small tree.  It is unusual in blooming in the winter; frequently in the coldest part of the winter, long before the leaves of the current season have unfolded.  For this reason, it is prized as an addition to the winter garden.  Witchhazel is a plant with some medicinal properties.  The inner bark is used to make a syrup for coughs and fever.  The fragrant oil is still used (dissolved in alcohol) as an astringent.  Native to eastern North America.  Fall color - lemon-yellow.
