Provost calls for revision of the general education curriculum.

2006

Taskforce of faculty, staff, and students begins review of the existing curriculum.

2007

Taskforce reports to the Provost on "What do our students need to know to thrive in the 21st century?"

2008

General Education Committee is appointed by the President with representation from every college, from every campus, and from student affairs. The Committee names the new curriculum the "Carolina Core".

2009

Proposal for a new Carolina Core curriculum is present to the Faculty Senate and is adopted.

December 2009

University Forum: Discussion of distribution requirements and learning outcomes.

Spring 2010

Committee works with faculty content experts in development of course syllabus components, criteria for levels of attainment of outcomes (foundational, advanced, integrative), and assessment plans.

March 2010

University Forum: Discussion of distribution requirements and course proposal guidelines.

Summer and Fall 2010

Colleges begin review of internal curriculum requirements to balance college goals with new Carolina Core requirements. Committee works to develop the process and procedures for course approval for the Carolina Core.

September 2010

University Forum: Discussion of course selection and assessment policies and procedures.

November 2010

Carolina Core distribution requirements presented to the Faculty Senate

December 2010

Carolina Core Distribution Requirements presented for vote in Faculty Senate.

January - March 2011

Carolina Core Committee and subcommittees develop Carolina Core course approval criteria and procedures

March 2011

Faculty Forum on Carolina Core course approval process.

April 2011

Faculty Senate reports on implementation of the Carolina Core.

August 2011 - ongoing

Departments/faculty submit courses for approval as Carolina Core courses

Three-person Core Component subcommittees review proposals, pass to Faculty Senate Committee on Curricula and Courses

September 2011-ongoing

Faculty Senate approves Carolina Core courses

May 2012

Target deadline for Carolina Core courses to be approved for Fall 2012 implementation

Fall 2012

New Carolina Core is implemented for first year class
