Fall 2011 Update
Thank you for visiting the University of South Carolina Carolina Core website! For more than three years faculty, professional staff, and students have worked together to revise the general education curriculum. Every semester we host a University Forum, inviting everyone at our USC-Columbia, Lancaster, Salkahatchie, Sumter, and Union campuses to come together and hear a report on what the Carolina Core Committee has been doing and to offer input on development of the new curriculum.
In the new Carolina Core curriculum, we have reaffirmed our commitment to traditional general education in the liberal arts with attention to several new areas of learning as well. A comparison of the extant and new curriculum provides an overview of the Carolina Core. In April 2009 the Faculty Senate received the Committee’s recommendation and voted to approve the learning goals of the revised curriculum. The following summer a series of contextual statements were developed to provide more information on what courses should include in order to meet each of the nine learning outcomes.
Fall 2010 the Carolina Core Committee held a University Forum on distribution requirements and these were approved by Faculty Senate at the December 2010 meeting. In the Spring and Summer of 2011 we developed the Carolina Core course proposal process. We have posted syllabus rubrics to assist with developing Carolina Core course proposals. Course proposals may be submitted beginning September 2011 and we are set to meet our target launch date of Fall 2012 for the new Carolina Core curriculum.
As always we want to provide information that you need on the new general education curriculum. Please take a look around this website. If you have questions about the content or the process, please share those with us at any time via online submission or by using the contact information below.
If you haven’t already seen the article on USC’s general education reform please take a look: AAC&U reported on our new Carolina Core and Quality Enhancement Plan, USC Connect: We are delighted that our efforts to enrich undergraduate studies are receiving national attention.
The Carolina Core is strengthened by the participation of faculty, students, and staff - we welcome you to our website.

November 2009 Update
University Forum on the Carolina Core

Russell House Theater
University of South Carolina Columbia
All USC Columbia and Regional Campus faculty, staff, and students are invited to an open forum on the proposed Carolina Core, the new general education curriculum at USC.
The Carolina Core Curriculum Committee solicits comments on the two items below, developed since the April 2009 Forum:
- A Table comparing the Carolina Core Components and their associated Learning Outcomes with existing General Education Requirements and their credit hour distribution.
- An Appendix Document containing a set of "context statements" that elaborate on the nine learning outcomes adopted last April by the Faculty Senate.
Members of the university community who are unable to attend are encouraged to submit written comments to the Committee via this website.
During the process of revising the general education curriculum the Carolina Core Committee anticipates a Faculty Forum each semester to share information with the USC faculty system-wide and receive responses and suggestions as the new curriculum unfolds.
October 2009 Update
In April 2009, the Faculty Senate approved the proposed curriculum revision including the Carolina Core Components and the Learning Outcomes.
During the Summer 2009, the Carolina Core Committee drafted an Appendix Document to provide additional contextual information on the Carolina Core learning outcomes. The appendix discusses the motivation behind the learning goals as well as explains how foundational and integrative courses may address the learning outcomes. The new document also enumerates what we expect a student to learn for each Core component.
The Appendix reflects ideas and suggestions from the original faculty task forces, the Faculty Forums, and other comments received by the Committee.
