USC hosts Fall Fair for Sistercare

This year, South Carolina received a disturbing distinction. The state ranks second in the nation in domestic violence committed against women.
In 2010, 46 women across the state were murdered by men they knew. The majority of the victims were wives, common-law wives, ex-wives or girlfriends of the offender. Sixty-five percent of them were killed with guns, and the average age of the victim was 41.
A majority of the victims wind up in shelters, with only the clothes on their backs, no money and little hope.
A group of University of South Carolina students from an event planning class want to make a difference in the lives of these families. The students from the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management are set to host a Fall Fair for Sistercare, the Midlands battered women’s shelter, from 5:30 p.m. – 10 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14. at The Hall at Senate’s End.
Sistercare provides emergency shelter for families, hosts a 24-hour service telephone line, offers community counseling services and transitional housing for families in crisis.
The Fall Fair will include food, live performances by Atlas Road Crew, the USC Cockapella singers and the USC Dance Marathon Morale Team. There will also be a silent auction.
“Many non-profits approach this class each year, but because South Carolina has such an alarming record with domestic violence, Professor (Annette) Hoover and the class wanted to bring awareness to Sistercare and its work. We want the Carolina family and Columbia community to know that Sistercare provides shelter and support for the victims,” said USC senior Grace Salter.
Former television host Joe Pinner will serve as the emcee.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children, and can be purchased at http://www.sistercarefair.com or at the door. Families can purchase a special package for $40, which includes two adults tickets, two children’s tickets and 16 food and beverage tickets (additional children can be added for $6 each).
