The University of South Carolina is taking campus convenience to the next level with the launch of the Mobile CarolinaCard, a new digital ID that allows students, faculty and staff to access campus services directly from their smartphones or smartwatches.

Beginning in Fall 2026, USC students, faculty, and staff will be able to add their credentials to their iPhone, Android device, or compatible smartwatch, making it easy to access campus buildings, make purchases, use campus facilities and more with the Mobile CarolinaCard.

The University’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved a contract with Transact Campus on March 17, 2025, to develop the Mobile CarolinaCard platform. If extended through its full five-year term, the contract will total $1.5 million.

“USC wanted to make everyday campus life easier. Students, faculty, and staff already manage so much from their phones, so bringing the CarolinaCard to a mobile format felt like a natural next step.”

Chavis McDonald, director of customer experience and change management for Business Affairs.

The Mobile CarolinaCard provides all the functionality of your physical CarolinaCard, with the added convenience of your mobile device. Simply tap your phone or compatible smartwatch at a card reader to access residence halls and offices, purchase meals at dining halls, shop at campus stores, borrow library books and more.

Each Mobile CarolinaCard can be stored on up to two devices. Eligible devices include smartphones and compatible smartwatches, allowing users to access their credentials from the devices they use most. iPhone users can add the card to Apple Wallet, while Android users can access it through compatible digital wallet applications.

To activate a Mobile CarolinaCard, users must download the Transact eAccounts app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, select the University of South Carolina, and log in using their network credentials. After uploading an ID photo and a government-issued photo ID for verification, users can select “Add to Wallet” to complete the setup process. Once activated, the physical CarolinaCard will be deactivated.

“This move is about being proactive,” says McDonald. “USC is responding to how people already live and work, rather than waiting for outdated systems to become a problem.”

To ensure a smooth transition, the university will provide support and resources for students, faculty, and staff adopting the new technology.

The transition to Mobile CarolinaCard aligns with USC’s ongoing commitment to innovation, security and sustainability. By reducing reliance on plastic ID cards and streamlining access to campus services, the university aims to create a more efficient and environmentally responsible campus experience.

“Mobile credentials open the door for future innovation. They create a more flexible and secure foundation that can grow with the university,” says McDonald.
