Introduction

The University of South Carolina, at a glance, has approximately 35,000 students in 16 Colleges and Schools. The SEOE is within the College of Arts and Sciences.  The SEOE offers four undergraduate degree programs and five graduate degree programs.  At the undergraduate level, we offer one Bachelor of Arts degree (BA in Environmental Studies) and three Bachelor of Science degrees (BS in Environmental Science, Geological Sciences and Marine Science ).  The SEOE has approximately 600 undergraduates within our four degree programs and we invite you to hear more about the School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment from the following videos.

Faculty Research in the SEOE

Our faculty conduct research which provides a significant impact on the courses they teach.  Our department offers a unique experience having high caliber scientists teaching our undergraduate courses. The faculty in the SEOE bring their research knowledge and experience into the classroom to educate students on the latest scientific advancements in their field of research. Hear about a few of our world-renowned faculty in each of the primary degree programs. This is a complete list of our faculty. The links below highlight several of our faculty and their groundbreaking research.

The USC Baruch Marine Field Lab

Our students have the opportunity to work and learn at our Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences down on the coast. Located on the North Inlet Estuary, an environmentally unique location that offers incredible research opportunities for undergraduate students to pursue their interests.

However, our degree programs are not just about curriculum and course work!  As a highly ranked Carnegie R1 Research Institution with a “very high research activity,” our students enjoy engaging in research. Whether with a faculty member in the field or their lab or with one of the various SEOE student organizations, students have many opportunities to be engaged.  Our approximately student organizations range from SEAS (Students Engaged in Aquatic Sciences) to the Beekeeping club, SCUBA club, to student chapters of the SC Wildlife Federation, AWWA, Sierra Club and Soc. Ex. Geophysicists. Another opportunity many of our students utilize to expand their horizons is through Study Abroad; our students have had amazing experiences all over the world.

We recognize the financial implications of a college degree; the benefits of investing for a chosen career path as well the long-term earning potential, but understanding the immediate costs, too.   A variety of scholarships are available and we encourage you to apply for any number of these. For SEOE scholarships,  apply here by April 1 for each coming academic year.

As you are considering your career pathway, let’s look at a number of career options available with each degree offered by the SEOE.

I welcome any questions that you might have as you are considering majoring in any of our programs.  I can be reached at UGradDir@seoe.sc.edu. We can also schedule a virtual meeting to answer any questions you or your family might have in greater detail.
