Tenure and Promotion

The University of South Carolina is committed to recruiting, retaining, and promoting outstanding faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, service, and outreach. The University believes that the presence of a high quality and diverse community of scholars is necessary to achieve such excellence.

The Faculty Manual contains university guidelines for tenure and promotion.  Unit Criteria and procedures for tenure and promotion are available online. The University Committee on Tenure and Promotions Guidelines for Units: Preparing Criteria and Files [pdf] also provides information for candidates and units on the compilation, submission, and confidential handling of tenure and promotion files.

Provost and UCTP Joint Statements on Supportive Actions for Faculty during COVID-19
The following documents provide policy statements from the Provost on formal faculty evaluation extensions, including tenure-clock extensions and post-tenure review, as well as joint guidance from the Provost and UCTP to all colleagues involved in faculty evaluation processes to show compassion and flexibility during the disruption of COVID-19. The Office of the Provost is currently in the process of issuing updated letters documenting tenure-clock extensions for all USC Columbia faculty hired during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Submit Candidate and Unit T&P Chair Names

The names of candidates for tenure/promotion review must be submitted according to the tenure promotion calendar schedules. 
Submit candidate names online.

Names of unit T&P chairs chosen by the units each year should be submitted to the Office of the Provost online.
