Construction crews delivered building materials and prepared the foundation before more than 200 USC students begin work on the house. Students worked a collective 1,100 hours to construct the house Nov. 12-15.
Members of USC Habitat for Humanity and volunteers from Columbia-area Rotary clubs, USC residence halls, Greek organizations, and service clubs worked in one-hour shifts from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. each day. Working under supervision, volunteers erected floors, walls, and roof trusses; installed shingles, siding, and electrical wiring; and completed the house in four days.
The house was moved Nov. 16 to its permanent site on Gervais Street.
The Greene Street "build" is the first sponsored by USC Habitat for Humanity, which began raising money last spring to complete the house. With the help of local Rotary clubs and Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity, the USC chapter raised $50,000 in seven months.
USC Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1998. Before this building event on campus, the campus chapter has provided volunteers to build houses with Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity.
