Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke will discuss bipolar disorder at 10 a.m. Nov. 18 in Gambrell Hall, Room 250. Her topic will be "Successful Living with Bipolar Disorder: A Personal Journey," and her message will emphasize the importance of recognition, communication, and adherence.
Duke was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after having been misdiagnosed with depression for many years. She wrote two bestselling books chronicling her life in show business and her struggles with bipolar disorder. For more than 20 years, she has been an advocate for reducing the stigma of mental illness.
Duke received the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker. She was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1985 to 1989.
