UofSC's exchange program in Australia offers students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Aussie culture by living among Australia's people. This program is located in the southeastern state of Victoria, a land of rich scenic contrast, home to beautiful beaches, mountains, deserts, forests, fields and volcanic plains. Students will attend Deakin University, one of the largest universities in Australia, which prides itself on its reputation as a progressive university with strong ties to professional and business communities. UofSC students can attend any of Deakin's four campuses, which are located in three different cities: one in Melbourne-Burwood, two in Geelong, and one in Warrnambool.

Cost: UofSC resident tuition rates + in-country costs

Requirements: minimum 3.0 GPA

Students pay in-state tuition and fees directly to UofSC. The cost of living is higher in Australia, but will vary depending on the type of accommodation you choose, your lifestyle, and the location you study. As a general guide, students should have a minimum of AUD$8,000 (approx. USD $5,100) available for living expenses per semester. Meals are estimated between $700-900 AUD per month (approx. $450-$575 USD).

Students must enroll in four courses . Students can browse the course offerings on Deakin's website paying special attention to any pre-requisite requirements. Trimester 1 at Deakin is the equivalent of UofSC's Spring semester, while Trimester 2 at Deakin is the equivalent of Fall semester.

Throughout the year, the Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) offers ski, day, weekend and extended trips for students at heavily discounted rates.

All students must purchase the Overseas Student Health Cover through Deakin University in order to meet the requirements for the Australian student visa. The cost of this insurance is approximately AUD$250 per semester.

Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Education Abroad Office for more details.

Students may choose to live in an on-campus residential college or share a flat off-campus. Students are guaranteed on-campus or pre-arranged off-campus accommodation provided their application is received before Deakin's housing application deadline. Housing costs are paid in Australia and vary based on the type of accommodation chosen. Additionally, Deakin recommends finding short-term accommodation when you first arrive, if unable to secure long-term housing before entering Australia.

The Deakin academic calendar runs on a Trimester system, with the first trimester running from late February to mid June. The second trimester commences in July and runs through October, and the third trimester runs from late October through early February. UofSC students are recommended to enroll in Trimester 1 for the spring semester and Trimester 2 for the fall semester. UofSC students can also enroll fro a full academic year and should talk to an Education Abroad Advisor about trimester options.

Deakins hosts orientation activities. Past orientations have included guided hikes through the rainforest, sightseeing along one the most scenic stretches of Australia's coast and optional surfing, yoga, and cooking lessons.  This orientation costs around AUD$180.

All students studying in Australia are required to have a valid Subclass 500 Australian Student Visa. The current cost of this visa is approximately $710 AUD. Students are automatically granted permission to work up to 20-hours a week in Australia with this visa.
