University of Liverpool
Area: | Global Exchange |
Location: | Liverpool |
Country: | England |
Term: | Spring, Fall, Academic Year |
USC's exchange program in England is designed to help American students gain first hand knowledge of British culture. The program is located in Liverpool, England, two hours north west of London by train. Liverpool, one of England's largest cities and home to many of the UK's cultural figures, has a long history of industry and arts. Students will attend the University of Liverpool, which was founded in 1881.
Cost: USC resident tuition rates + in-country costs
Requirements: 3.0 GPA
Students on an exchange program will pay tuition and fees directly to UofSC. Housing, books, meals, and personal expenses will be paid in Liverpool. Although the UK is a more expensive place to live due to the weak exchange rate between the USD and the GBP, Liverpool prides itself on being one of the most affordable cities in the UK. University of Liverpool estimates that students should budget approximately £410 - £1,092 per month for living costs.
The program at the University of Liverpool offers a full curriculum. Students take classes with British and other international students. Classes are taught in English. It is suggested that students choose modules from a maximum of two departments, preferably from the same School and year to avoid timetable clashes. Students typically take 60 UK credits and earn 15 US credit hours per semester.
To see courses UofSC students have taken at this university, please reference the Registrar's Course Equivalency Table.
The program does not offer organized excursions. Students do have the opportunity for individual travel. Regional travel to London, Manchester and northern England are all within a days travel. Liverpool also serves as a hub for international travel to mainland Europe, the rest of the UK and Ireland. Students do have the opportunity to get involved in sports organizations on campus and attend events offered through the university.
Per university policy, all USC students will be charged for emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance of for their time abroad. Students will be enrolled in this insurance by the education abroad office prior to their departure. Contact the Education Abroad Office for more details.
Students can choose to live in residence halls with other students. Housing costs, which may or may not include board depending on the housing option chosen, are paid to the University of Liverpool. Students studying for a spring term or academic year are gaurenteed housing. Fall students should apply for accommodation early to secure placement.
Classes begin at the end of September and end in mid-late January* for the fall semester. In the spring, classes begin in the end of January and can go through mid-June, depending on the classes the student is enrolled in. Please note that both spring and summer terms are the equivalent to USC's Spring semester.
*students participating in the fall semester must note that although classes end in December, final exams take place in early-mid January. University of Liverpool does allow for students to take those examinations in the US. For more details, please contact the education abroad office.
Students will attend orientation upon arrival to Liverpool. At orientation students will tour the campus, learn about the support networks that are available to them and finalize their course registration.
Students who attend the University of Liverpool for one semester (less than 6 months) do not need to apply for a visa in advance. You will receive a Student Visitor visa at the airport. Students studying for the full academic year will need to apply for the PBS Tier Four General Student visa. Please contact the Education Abroad Office if you have questions.
