UofSC's exchange program in Argentina is designed to expose students to Argentinean life and culture. The program is located in the capital city of Buenos Aires, situated in eastern Argentina near the Rio de la Plata. Students will attend the University of Palermo. The university's main campus is located in the Palermo neighborhood, an area known for its squares, gardens, shops, and cafes. The program offers specific courses for international students in Spanish language, Argentine literature and culture, Latin American business, and Latin American history.

Cost: UofSC resident tuition rates + in-country costs

Requirements: 3.0 GPA, four semesters of college-level Spanish or equivalent

Argentina is an affordable place to study abroad in due to the strong dollar to peso exchange rate. Students are responsible for all of their extra personal expenses including books, local transportation, entertainment, etc., budgeting around $1500-$3000 a semester. The actual amount needed will vary depending on personal spending habits.

Students typically earn 15 credit hours per semester. Students can improve their language skills or learn more about Latin America by taking courses in the Spanish as a Second Language program, or the Latin American Cultural Identity program. Students with advanced level Spanish may also enroll in standard university courses with local and other international students. All these courses are taught exclusively in Spanish.

In the past, the program has organized excursions to other sites within Argentina for an additional fee. Recent excursions have included trips to the Patagonian provinces, Iguazú Falls, Mendoza and San Juan vineyards, and Córdoba. Students also have the opportunity for individual travel. Students are encouraged to participate in on campus organizations and sports teams run through the university's student union

Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Education Abroad Office for more details.

The Universidad de Palermo does not provide housing on campus, but does assist students in arranging accommodation. Students can choose to live with Argentinean host families to help provide maximum exposure to the Spanish language and to experience everyday life and culture in Buenos Aires. Apartments are also available. Room and board costs are paid in Argentina.

Students can study at the University of Palermo for the fall and spring semester. The fall semester runs from August through December. The spring semester is March through July.

Orientation is mandatory at the University of Palermo for all international students. Students will go through an orientation to the city as well as to the campus that includes information on the transportation system, currency issues, banking and bank location, telephone calls, safety issues, as well as transportation to and from the university, location of the schools within the urban campus, library location, registration, meeting with professors and authorities, class schedule and rooms, internet access, e-mail address at the University of Palermo, sports facilities, etc.

International students studying in Argentina for longer than 90 days must acquire a Student/Resident visa for their exchange period. Students should apply through the nearest Argentine consulate as soon as they have received their letter of acceptance as the visa process may take up to three months.
