Weinberg on Enemies with Benefits: Live @ the Library

Live @ the Library virtual talk with UofSC Political Philosophy and Ethics Professor Justin Weinberg, whose recent research looks at interpersonal disagreement @UofSCLibraries Instagram Live at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 23.

“We tend to characterize those with whom we disagree over social, political, economic, and moral issues as enemies. Since this tendency can be bad for us (and them) in several ways, we should see if there are rational grounds for resisting it. It turns out there are: people sometimes benefit each other precisely because of their disagreement with each other — a fact which is often overlooked when we form opinions about our 'enemies,'" says Weinberg.

In his presentation, Weinberg will introduce and provide examples of what we can call "rival benefit" and explore what good can come by more widely recognizing it.
