North Horseshoe

 

Large abstract painting of the University of South Carolina historic horseshoe. The painting is composed with shades of yellows, pinks, whites, purples, and reds with touches of blue. The colors are marbled together to create the horizon and lines are added in the bottom third of the painting to create the abstract architecture. The painting was designed in a vertical orientation.

Painted by Philip Mullen in 1978. Mullen is a renowned artist that has been exhibited nationally and internationally. His work is not only part of the permanent collections at McKissick Museum, but also the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., Brooklyn Museum in New York, Sonje Museum of Contemporary Art in South Korea, among others. He specializes in the use of acrylic paints.
