Conference on life and works of James Dickey is Jan. 19-20

A conference on the life and works of James Dickey will be held at USC Jan. 19-20. The conference will feature literary scholars from universities throughout the United States and the United Kingdom.

"James Dickey: A Celebration of the Life and Works," will take place on the tenth anniversary of Dickey's death and will offer an opportunity to re-evaluate his art, impact, and reputation.

Author Pat Conroy will deliver the keynote address at 4 p.m. Jan. 20 in Belk Auditorium of the Moore School of Business. His talk will conclude the two-day event.

Dickey, who died in 1997, achieved fame as a writer when his novel, Deliverance, was made into a popular movie featuring Burt Reynolds. The Atlanta native also was a poet, novelist, and critic who taught at USC as poet-in-residence and First Carolina Professor of English for nearly 30 years. He was particularly proud of his service in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

His personal book collection, The James Dickey Library, is housed in the university's Thomas Cooper Library. Highlights from the collection will be on display in the mezzanine level of the library Jan. 19-April 1.
