Academics and Support

Need some assistance in a particular class? Uncertain about how to study or take notes? Do you simply need general academic motivation? Gamecock Gateway provides academic support for you at both Midlands Technical College and the University of South Carolina.

Academic Advising

Every Gamecock Gateway student works with an academic adviser from Midlands Technical College. Your relationship with your adviser is an important one, as your adviser's job is to help you succeed. You will be advised in both the fall and spring semesters to ensure you are scheduling the right classes, that you are maintaining your minimum course load, and to provide the academic support you need to transfer successfully to UofSC your sophomore year.

Academic Calendar

Our students operate on a unique academic calendar. Keep up with important information and review the Gamecock Gateway academic calendar.

Tutoring and Academic Support

The MTC Academic Success Center and UofSC Student Success Center collaborate to oversee tutoring at Bates House, and tutoring subjects are specific to MTC courses.

How It Works

All tutoring sessions are scheduled as drop-in sessions, so there is no appointment needed. Students can simply show up in the Bates House Study Lounge during the times posted to receive assistance; there is no additional cost to Gateway students to receive tutoring!

MTC operates an Academic Success Center on both the Airport and Beltline campuses.

As a Gamecock Gateway student, you will take your courses at the Midlands Technical College Airport and/or Beltline campuses. A shuttle is provided Monday-Friday between the UofSC campus and the MTC campuses. Your major(s) will largely determine your campus assignment.

Each student works with an academic adviser at MTC who will work closely with University of South Carolina academic personnel to ensure that the coursework complies with UofSC transfer requirements.

No. While in the Gamecock Gateway program, students can only take classes at Midlands Technical College. Once you have completed 30 hours of coursework and meet all of the UofSC transfer requirements, you will have the opportunity to enroll as a full-time UofSC student and take classes at UofSC.

Students are expected to be enrolled in a minimum of 15 credit hours each semester, so if you need to drop a class, please meet with your MTC adviser immediately. Students must complete 30 hours of transferable credit through Midlands Technical College in order to continue at UofSC the following fall.

Yes. Gamecock Gateway students must declare a major as their schedules are created in order to meet the transfer requirements. This allows students to transition smoothly into their sophomore year at UofSC.

Transfer Requirements

Gamecock Gateway is a one-year-only program extending from fall to spring in a single academic year. To transfer to USC Columbia, students must:

  • earn 30 transferrable credit hours at Midlands Technical College
  • have a 2.25 GPA or higher (some USC programs will require a higher GPA for admission)
