celebrates literacy initiative
The School of Library and
Information Science celebrated its newest initiative, “Children,
Libraries and Literacy”, with a special reception at the
President’s House Wednesday, October 26. The event included
recognition of the Augusta Baker Chair in Childhood Literacy, one
of the three unique components comprising the $6 million initiative.
More than 100 alumni, friends and literacy supporters gathered
to show their commitment to the School’s new statewide program
designed to impact literacy among South Carolina’s children,
parents and childcare center workers.
"It was good to see so many different people from various
parts of the University and the community, including the State
Department of Education, come together to celebrate the initiative,"
said Dan Barron, director of the School of Library and Information
Science.
Honored Guests included Rep. Ken Clark, members of the Augusta
Baker Family, members of South Carolina’s First Steps, members
of Parents and Adults Inspiring Reading Success (PAIRS), members
of the Sunshine House childcare center organization, and members
of LINKS, an African-American service group.
