Community Service

Capstone Scholars are provided with unique opportunities to enrich their passion for helping others and deepen their understanding of their impact on the world. With service-learning events taking place on campus, in the Columbia community, and beyond, the possibilities for giving back are endless!

Traditional Service Events

Typically consisting of medium-sized groups of 15-25 volunteers, our Traditional Service Events give Capstone Scholars the chance to volunteer in the Columbia community. These events are offered every other week throughout the semester.

Weeding Wednesdays

Come find us at the Carolina Community Garden on Weeding Wednesdays, where Capstone Scholars take care of veggies and each other! Everything grown in our gardens is donated to the Gamecock Pantry and aims to fight food insecurity amongst students and staff on our campus.

Civic Engagement Series

Positive community impact isn't just about service. Our in-house civic engagement trainings cover Columbia’s most challenging issues, identify the root causes of those issues, and teach how to advocate for change. Participants are welcome to attend a single training or attend multiple trainings over the course of a year to receive their Civic Engagement Certification.

Day of Service

Each semester, Capstone Scholars have the incredible opportunity to stretch their boundaries beyond Columbia and take part in a service trip to another city. Students volunteer for a few hours in the morning and then have the rest of the afternoon to explore a new place! Past Day of Service trips have included Charleston, Savannah, and Greenville.

Alternative Spring Break

Each spring break, Capstone Scholars head to the white sand beaches of Merritt Island, FL to serve with Sam’s House and the Endangered Lands Program. Help do your part in preserving our environment by protecting the many species that live on the island, all while having a ton of fun! Please contact our Service Team if you're interested.
