How do Scandinavian societies support children and families, and what can the United States learn from their approach to addressing contemporary social problems? This is the question we will explore in this study abroad class. In particular, this education abroad course examines contemporary social problems through the lens of families, children, and social welfare in Sweden and Norway. Students investigate issues such as poverty, inequality, health, gender inequality, work-family conflict, immigration, social inclusion, and child wellbeing while exploring how Scandinavian societies address these challenges through public policy and social institutions.

Costs

Program fee: Estimated $3,500 before any Capstone Scholars Program funding is applied. Once a student's application for the program is accepted, they will automatically be eligible for the Capstone Scholars Adventure Grant which will reduce the program fee to $500.

Includes:

  • Accommodations in Stockholm and Oslo
  • 2 group meals, breakfast for all days
  • All excursions included in the itinerary 
  • Local Guide with 24/7 language support
  • 3 USC Program Leaders

Does not include:

  • Airfare
  • University required insurance
  • Education Abroad application fee ($225)
  • Tuition associated with the course SOCY 340 (we encourage participants to apply for the Passport Travel Grant to cover $1,500 towards tuition costs)
  • Passport
  • Meals not covered in the itnerary
  • Personal spending
