Lab Tests & Screenings

The lab provides walk-in health screenings and rapid in-house testing. We also partner with outside reference labs to provide a full range of testing. Call 803-777-3175.

Request a Test

You can request any of the following screenings yourself through MyHealthSpace or at any kiosk in the Center for Health and Well-Being. Your doctor will need to order any test that's not on this list.


Tests and Screenings

High cholesterol is an indicator of coronary artery disease, something that can go unnoticed until it causes a heart attack. We'll give you a routine blood test that will return a complete lipids profile and check that your cholesterol is within healthy limits.

Diabetes is caused by high blood glucose levels that prevent the body from producing or using insulin. We give two types of tests for diabetes: 

Fasting Plasma Glucose Test
We'll do a routine blood test, given after you've fasted for 10 to 12 hours.

Hemoglobin A1c Test
We'll do a routine blood draw to measure your glucose over the course of three months.

You can request a number of tests for STIs (sexually transmitted infections) yourself. Please call 803-576-6558. Appointments start with a brief meeting with a sexual health educator to discuss testing options, after which a lab provider will handle your testing. Please review the testing window times before scheduling your appointment. Tests done too early may not be accurate.

Blood Tests

  • HIV (Testing should take place two weeks after exposure)
  • Syphilis (RPR) (Testing should take place three months after exposure)

Urine Tests

  • Chlamydia (Testing should take place two weeks after exposure)
  • Gonorrhea (Testing should take place two weeks after exposure)
  • Trichomoniasis

We'll give you a routine blood test to screen for sickle cell anemia, an inherited disease which can cause tiredness, shortness of breath, dizziness and coldness in your hands and feet. 

Please plan ahead if you're getting this screening for an athletic tryout. We may not be able to accommodate short turnaround times.

To assure adequate immune response post vaccination the following Titers Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Hepatitis B Surface Antibody may be requested. In addition, participants may request screening for latent TB by QuantiFERON Gold or T-spot testing.

This testing is blood typing only and intended for Students in Criminal Justice or ROTC programs that require this information.

Students, faculty and staff who need routine labs as part of an immigration physical may bring orders from an outside provider to the laboratory for testing. Requirements typically include urine testing. Patients should avoid urination for 1 hour before presenting to the lab.

Requests for vaccinations will require a separate appointment with Allergy and Immunizations. Call us at 803-777-9511.


Fasting Before Your Test

We recommend fasting overnight or 10 to 12 hours for any test that requires it. That will make sure you're in a basal metabolic state and will produce more accurate test results.
Avoid: All food and beverages including coffee, tea and sugar-free products.
Drink Water: Hydration produces the best lab results. 


Getting Your Results

How you get your test results will depend on what kind of test or screening you had done. We can only provide information about the test and report format. Contact your health care provider with questions about your results.

Your screening results will be available on your MyHealthSpace account after a licensed health care professional reviews them. If any follow up is needed, your provider will contact you directly.

Your lab test results will go directly to the doctor that requested them. The lab cannot provide the results of doctor-ordered tests over the phone under any circumstances.

Patient Services will release results about STIs and HIV/AIDS to you.

These lab results fall under the category of privileged information in our privacy practices.

If your results are positive or there is a concern, you will be contacted to schedule a follow up appointment. Negative results will be sent via secure message in MyHealthSpace. You should receive results within 48-72 hours.


Outside Lab Orders

Licensed providers may fax orders directly to the laboratory at 803-576-5668 or 866-245-2537. There is a $25 handling fee for all outside orders. All orders must include:

  • Two patient identifiers (name, date of birth or social security number)
  • The health care provider's name and signature
  • The health care provider's phone and fax numbers
  • Diagnosis code (ICD10)
  • Clearly listed tests (LabCorp test numbers may help clarify panel requests)
