Peer Writing Tutor

Peer Writing Tutors meet 1-on-1 with students to help them develop effective writing and communication skills on a range of writing projects including essays, lab reports, personal statements and more.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered, you must:

  • Be an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina - Columbia
  • Have completed at least one semester at the University of South Carolina – Columbia by your start date
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Demonstrate effective college writing skills through a writing sample 
 

Preferred Requirements

To be considered, you must:

  • Have effective interpersonal and communication skills  
  • Have strong organizational and time-management skills 
  • Have a commitment to helping students grow as writers 
  • Willingness to grow professionally 
  • Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviors and attitudes
  • Have taken multiple courses with a writing component (essays, lab reports, speeches etc) 
 

Job Responsibilities

  • Hold 1-on-1 appointments with students
  • Facilitate student learning of effective writing processes and strategies
  • Maintain confidentiality on academic matters students disclose to them 
  • Attend and participate in all required trainings and biweekly staff meetings 
  • Complete the SSC Peer Leader Training Cohort during first semester of employment
  • Maintain accurate records of completed sessions
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Peer Writing 
 

Breakdown of Hours

  • 8 – 10 hours of 1-on-1 writing tutoring availability
  • 1 hour every other week for staff meetings
  • 1 hour each week for Cohort (new Peer Tutors only)
  • Additional hours available for special events
