Garnet Media Group wins regional advertising awards

Student staff members from Garnet Media Group and Garnet & Black magazine, one of Garnet Media Group’s partner organizations, earned local honors at the annual American Advertising Awards gala on Saturday (Feb. 22) in Columbia. Known as the ADDYs, more than 60 awards recognizing exceptional work in advertising were presented to advertising professionals and students in the Midlands.

A team from Garnet & Black magazine, including creative director Meredith Price, former creative director Grace Steptoe, photo editors Mark Maddaloni and Coleman Rojahn, former art director and illustrator Gracie Newton, and photographer Awa Dia earned a gold ADDY, the top award in each category, for the four magazine covers published in 2019.

Emily Schoonover, the lead student designer for Garnet Media Group’s creative services team, was also recognized for her work on the media group’s annual advertising guide with a silver ADDY.

According to the American Advertising Federation of the Midlands’ website, the American Advertising Awards “embody the true spirit of creative excellence by recognizing advertising in all forms and media from entrants of all levels around the country.” Winners in the Midlands competition advance to district and, later, national competitions.
