USC alum assumes command of nation’s largest naval base

Navy Captain Ray Glenn, new commander of Naval Station Norfolk

Captain Ray Glenn, a 1999 Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing graduate, assumed command of Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the United States.

Glenn, a native of Humboldt, Tennessee, attended nuclear power training school after enlisting in the Navy in 1992 and served aboard the USS Frank Cable. He received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps after graduating with a civil engineering degree from USC.

Glenn’s sea tours included aboard the USS Ticonderoga guided-missile cruiser, USS Cole guided-missile destroyer, and aircraft carriers USS George Washington and USS Harry S. Truman. He was executive officer on guided-missile destroyers USS Oscar Austin and USS Gonzalez, commanding officer of the USS Gonzalez and reactor officer on the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier.

The captain’s assignments included as a military analyst on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, executive assistant to the commander for the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic and executive officer at Naval Station Norfolk.

“Service is in my DNA,” Glenn said at his change of command ceremony in Norfolk in February. “In every generation of my father’s family, as far back as we could trace, someone has answered the call to serve this nation whether it be a man or a woman. I just happened to be the one who climbed the highest. I want to thank you all for passing me that sense of service to our nation.”
