The University of South Carolina offers a competitive benefits package to eligible faculty and staff. Our dedicated employees enjoy the advantages of outstanding insurance and retirement programs offered through the State of South Carolina, as well as other university-specific offerings. 

Insurance Coverage

The right coverage can give you great peace of mind. Our group rates help keep insurance costs reasonable with options that include coverage for medical, vision, dental, life, cancer, hospital confinement, auto and home. 

Retirement Plans

University employees hired into permanent positions have the option to participate in either the South Carolina Retirement System's traditional pension program or the State Optional Retirement Program. Those in eligible positions, participate in the Police Officers Retirement Program. In addition, you may also choose to participate in the State Deferred Compensation Program with 457(b) and 401(k) plans, or in 403(b) plans with private insurance/investment companies.

Time Away from Work

The university observes 13 paid holidays set to coincide with the academic schedule each year. In addition, most permanent employees accrue sick leave and annual leave on a monthly basis with yearly maximums set for each type. The university adheres to the Family Medical Leave Act and provides leave with pay for National Guard or Armed Forces Reserves training as well as sabbatical leave for tenured faculty.

Health and Wellness Programs

As a higher education institution, we are dedicated to creating a healthy campus environment. Our campus is tobacco free and our campus wellness programs encourage healthy habits by providing an on-campus farmer's market, a produce delivery service and numerous training and education sessions. Campus recreation maintains two fitness facilities that include 400,000 square feet of space for individual and group exercise. 

Privileges and Discounts

Eligible faculty and staff may take one three-hour credit course per academic term at no charge. Other benefits include reduced-price tickets to athletic and cultural events, professional development programs, discounts at the University Bookstore, privileges in university libraries and access to other services such as fitness facilities at reduced rates or no cost.
