The University of South Carolina’s International Perspectives on Higher Education (IPHE) program will take place in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa during Spring Break 2017. This year’s program attracted the highest number of applications since IPHE’s inception with a total of 23 participants (up from 16). As a result, the USC Education Abroad Office (SAO) was excited to collaborate with a third party logistics provider, the Center for International Studies (CISabroad), to strategize ways to accommodate an increased number of IPHE attendees. This year’s diverse cohort includes faculty and staff members not only from the University of South Carolina, but also from Newberry College, North Carolina Central University, Georgia Highlands College, and Clayton State University.
The theme of this year’s IPHE program is comparative postsecondary education in South Africa after apartheid. Led by SAO Assistant Director of Global Collaborations Bill Pruitt, and Research Associate Professor of Geography and Director for the Center for Excellence for Geographic Research Jerry Mitchell, participants will visit four universities; the University of Johannesburg, the University of Witwatersand in Johannesburg, the University of Cape Town, and the University of the Western Cape. During each university visit participants will attend guest lectures and meet analogs at each institution. The itinerary also includes excursions to the Village of Soweto, the Apartheid Museum, Robben Island, and the District Six Museum.
While in South Africa, participants will be contributing to a group blog to showcase their experiences. Upon returning to USC, participants will complete follow-on projects to encourage education abroad at USC.
