Executive Order for COVID-19 Safety Protocols for Federal Contractors

November 2, 2021

On September 9, 2021, President Biden issued Executive Order 14042, “Ensuring Adequate COVID-19 Safety Protocols for Federal Contractors.” The President’s Order requires federal contractors to comply with requirements established by the Safer Federal Workforce Task Force. Those requirements include COVID-19 vaccinations for covered employees — including some University of South Carolina employees — with exemptions for medical and religious reasons.

The University of South Carolina is reviewing protocols already established at universities throughout the Southeast and nationwide and is also working closely with Clemson and MUSC to better understand the implications of President Biden’s Executive Order. We are taking a measured approach and are currently working to establish protocols regarding the Executive Order, including a determination of which employees may be covered by the vaccine requirement for federal contractors, as well as guidelines for potential impacted employees to apply for medical and/or religious exemptions. Additional information about these federal requirements will be shared with our community and affected employees soon.

Federal contracts are critical to advancing our university’s research mission of scientific discovery and service to the people of South Carolina and the nation.
