Daria Smirnova awarded dissertation grant

We are thrilled to announce that CPLT PhD student Daria Smirnova has been awarded a summer dissertation grant from ASEEES, the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies, which is the leading international organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about Central Asia, the Caucasus, Russia, and Eastern Europe in regional and global contexts.

Jiang Liu selected as NSF IMMERSE Fellow

Prof. Jiang Liu in LLC was recently selected from a highly competitive applicant pool of early- and mid-career scholars to participate in the UofSC National Science Foundation Institute in Measurement MEthodology in Rural Stem Education (IMMERSE).

Lara Lomicka Anderson awarded Outstanding Faculty Partner

Professor Lomicka Anderson is a member of the UofSC faculty who has demonstrated significant support for the division, the division’s programs and services, and the overall quality of campus life by aiding in student access, facilitating student progress and persistence, and advancing learning as the Preston Residential College Faculty Principal.

Ashley Williard

Ashley Williard receives 2023 NEH Summer Stipend

Ashley Williard's next book project, currently entitled Disruptive Minds: Madness in the Early French Atlantic, examines the ways mediated voices of the "mad" can expose unique sites of subjectivity that interrogate colonial power structures and archival silences. "The NEH Summer Stipend will allow me to devote time to writing and conduct significant archival research in France during summer 2023. In the Archives Nationales d’Outre Mer, the primary holding place of French colonial documents, I will consult military files, official correspondence, and notary records. In archives in Nantes, the principal French port of the slave trade, I will examine links between the Caribbean and France."

Professor Janzen receives breakthrough award

Spanish and comparative literature professor Rebecca Janzen has checked all the North America boxes: She is from Canada, works in the U.S. and her field of study is Mexican literature and culture. And, nine years removed from her Ph.D., she has published four books that all look at some aspect of Mexican culture or government and certain populations inside the country.

Portuguese students win awards

Aidan Thomason and Carlos Sanchez were awarded scholarships to go to Brazil. Aidan received a Fulbright Award and Carlos received a Boren Scholarship. Both students exemplify the value of hard work, rigorous study, and commitment to the Portuguese program.  

UofSC Spanish Program engaged in community

The Board of Directors of Palmetto Luna, a non-profit organization focusing on supporting the Latino Arts in SC have recognized Andrew Corley, Alanna Breen and Wendy Schneider for the great contributions they have done to keep alive a link between the university and the Latino community bringing students to work with them and supporting their activities.

German and Political Science major Jahleel Johnson was awarded a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Fellowship for 2022-23. The program consists of two months intensive language training at a German Fachhochschule or Berufsschule, one smester of classes at a German university, a three to five month internship with a German organization or company in one’s field.

Russia's Rome published in Russian

Congratulations to Judy Kalb on the publication of the Russian edition of Russia's Rome in Russia. It is about the cultural traditions surrounding Russian imperialism as seen in the texts of Russian modernist authors.
