Study Abroad in Wittenberg, Germany

Spend the summer in historic Wittenberg and earn UofSC credit!

dates TBD, 2024

In May and /or June of each year, we offer a five-week language immersion program in the heart of Germany.  Participants receive 3 UofSC credit hours at the 300 level (German 333), as well as 3 transfer credits from the Institut für Deutsche Sprache und Kultur. These 6 hours can count for major or minor credit. The dates for the summer 2020 program are May 25 - June 27. Students who have completed German 122, or higher level German courses are eligible to participate. The content of the course focuses on language practice and contemporary German culture.

Lutherstadt-Wittenberg is the site for the study. It is located about 80 kilometers southwest of Berlin in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Lodging is with German families from the Wittenberg area, selected by the Martin-Luther-Universität’s Institut für Deutsche Sprache und Kultur, our partner organization. Weekend excursions (Berlin, Dresden) and day trips (Wörlitz, Halle, etc.) are part of the organized program.

Participants make their own way to Berlin at the end of May. The day before the course begins, we are picked up from Tegel airport and bussed to Wittenberg, where students meet their host families. The return date after the study program ends is left open for independent travel and return to the U.S.

The cost this year, which varies annually according to the exchange rate between the dollar and the Euro, is $2900. This includes lodging (with breakfast and dinner) for almost 5 weeks, other meals and incidental expenses, weekend trips to Dresden and Berlin, 90+ hours of instruction, and all travel within Germany. The first deposit of $500.  On top of this, you will have to cover your own round-trip airfare (estimated at $1,500 to Berlin) and UofSC tuition for 3 credits.

Every study abroad participant must complete certain forms to track participation, assist in the event of an emergency, and mitigate the risk and liability taken on by UofSC as an institution. Make an appointment with a Study Abroad advisor as soon as you can to get these forms and also to get information about insurance. Visit http://studyabroad.sc.edu/ or call (803) 777-7557 to set up an appointment.
