Japan is one of the top economies in the world and an important US trade partner, as well as a global leader in innovative technology, including robotics.
It is a country rich in culture both old and new. While preserving its traditional culture, including Zen cultural forms and aesthetics as well as Edo culture such as ukiyoe and Kabuki, Japan has recently gained global recognition for many aspects of its popular culture, most prominently anime and manga.
The study of Japanese language and culture provides opportunities for further study in Japan as well as career opportunities connected with Japanese business, education and technology.

The Japanese Program offers a wide variety of culture and literature courses as well as language courses at all levels, from novice to advanced. There are extracurricular club activities available. The Japan club is very active in connecting USC students with students from Japan. The club sponsors Japanese cultural events and promotes social gatherings for cultural exchange. The Japanese anime club is also very active in showing Japanese anime and hosting conventions in Columbia.
The program has an official exchange partner with Kansai University in Japan and there are other study opportunities in Japan through the Study Abroad Office.
The opportunity for teaching English in Japan is available through the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program, promoted by the Japanese consulate in Atlanta, under the auspices of the Japanese government.
