Campus Conversation: Akiko Colbert

"My plan after graduation is to apply to a school counseling program. I have been an educator since I was in high school. I started as an assistant preschool teacher, and I later earned my degree in early care and education at Midlands Technical College. I changed to a middle school pathway because middle school is a tough time for students because they undergo major physical and emotional changes. I want to be able to keep them steady and prepare them for what comes next. I enjoyed my internship at Irmo Middle School this past year teaching 7th grade science and 8th grade English language arts. It solidified my decision to want to continue my pursuit of school counseling. Becoming a member of my sorority presented me with plenty of opportunities for personal and professional growth. I became a member in fall 2018. I held the presidential and vice president position as well as the fundraising chair."
