“When I joined the Garnet Media Group marketing team, my first semester freshman year, there wasn't much of a team at all — I think there were four of us combined. I talked to the supervisor that was over it, and he basically told me to go run it and I've been doing it ever since.
I think I called my mom almost in tears, I was like, "How do I do this? I have no clue what this even means. I've no clue what I'm going to be doing. What if I don't have enough time?” There were a million things running through my head. At the same time, I was lucky enough to have supervisors that saw something in me and were willing to take the chance on a first semester freshman.
I'm excited and, honestly, shocked at how much the team has grown over the past three years. Our team this semester is so impressive that I didn't even feel like I needed to recruit anymore. For the first time, I felt like we were in a good spot. Everybody knew what they were doing. I felt really confident to trust anybody on the team to be able to take over any aspect. I've also been able to internally promote people to different positions, whether it's running our on-campus events or running our social media or whatever it may be. They've gotten higher opportunities because they've proven themselves that much.
Everybody knows of The Daily Gamecock, but they don't necessarily know of Garnet Media Group. Within the past three years, I've seen that change, and I've seen that continue to evolve into me being able to say, “Garnet Media Group” and people, at least, have some level of brand recognition. That’s really special, and I think the marketing team can continue to do that. Within the next year, I’ll be looking for my replacement. To have a new perspective and a new excited mind come into the position will be really exciting to watch.”
