AAAS Cookout

Start the semester cocky

Whether it’s your first time on UofSC’s campus or you’re an old pro, the first week back in August can give you butterflies. New classes, new people and, for some, a new city. Luckily, the university offers a plethora of events and activities that week to help welcome students and boost their cocky spirits!

August 15

Find out why Russell House is the heart of campus at Bustle at the Russell. There will be snacks, activities and games, and a chance to win cash!

August 17

Before classes start, visit Popsicles, Planners and Peers to learn about the Student Success Center’s resources while enjoying gourmet popsicles and get a new UofSC academic planner.

It’s tradition for new Gamecocks to attend New Student Convocation. Join other new students and their families, along with UofSC’s president and other esteemed staff, to commemorate your inclusion as a new student at the university.

Don’t spend your first night before classes stressed. Join Student Life on the Historic Horseshoe for this year’s First Night Carolina and another year of spirit and tradition on campus.

August 19

For students looking to earn some extra money or extra career experience, the Part-Time Job Fair features both on- and off-campus employers who are hiring. It’s a casual, drop-in event — no need to dress up.

Join the Association of African American Students at the annual welcome back AAAS Cookout on Greene Street. Enjoy fantastic food fresh from the grill and meet new people.

August 20

Start the school year off right by participating in the year’s first Service Saturday. This monthly day of services allows you to choose from a range of service sites. Take this time to engage with the Columbia community and fellow Gamecocks!

August 22

If you are looking for volunteer or service opportunities, check out the Community Service Fair to connect with local and national nonprofit partners. These organizations help make Columbia a better place and sometimes are looking for interns and employees.

August 23

Welcome to Well-Being is a great event to learn more about the health and well-being resources on campus from the experts at University Health Services and Campus Recreation.

Start the first full week of classes right by joining Carolina Productions for the PaintU paint party. There will be music, fun lighting and of course paint! Plus, the Cockstock artist will be revealed at the party!

August 24

Jumpstart your journey on becoming a Columbia insider. The Discover Columbia Vendor Fair on Greene Street is a business showcase to help students get taste of all the unique shops, restaurants, communities and activities Columbia has to offer.

August 25

Join the Leadership and Service Center on Greene Street for the Student Organization Fair. Meet representatives from student organizations and learn about all the opportunities to get involved on campus. If you can’t find your people here, they can show you how to create your own organization for like-minded students.

August 27

Celebrate making it through the first week of classes with Cocky’s Quest — a series of fun and interesting challenges scattered all over campus that can win you prizes and bragging rights.
