One of the most exciting times of the fall semester is finally here — Rivalry Week.
On Nov. 29, the Gamecocks will take on the Clemson Tigers at Williams-Brice Stadium, and many exciting events are happening in the lead-up to the game.
But first, let’s reflect on the history of USC and Clemson’s storied rivalry. The Carolina-Clemson game, known as the “Palmetto Bowl” since 2014, is one of the oldest college football rivalries in the country, dating back to 1896 with USC taking the first game.
USC’s upset victory in 1902 sparked tensions between the schools, leading to near-violence and a seven-year suspension of the rivalry game. The 1902 game also began the Tiger Burn tradition, which now involves USC engineering students building a giant tiger to be burned during a Rivalry Week pep rally.
In 1984, the two schools channeled their competitive juices into a good cause — the Carolina-Clemson Blood Battle, which today is one of the nation’s largest annual blood drives.
On the field, Clemson currently leads the series 73-44 with four ties, but USC defeated the Tigers last year 17-14 at Death Valley.
Now that you’re fired up, check out these campus events to keep the excitement going before heading to Williams-Brice for the big game.
The Carolina Clemson Blood Battle — Nov. 17-21
Every year, USC competes with Clemson to collect blood for local hospitals and life-saving procedures. The annual drive is organized by the Carolina-Clemson Blood Drive Committee, the second-largest student-run organization on campus.
This year’s drive will take place at multiple locations, including the Russell House, Greene Street, 650 Lincoln and more.
Appointments can be made online through The Blood Connection or the American Red Cross with a valid email address. Donors will receive a T-shirt upon arrival at their appointment. While appointments are encouraged, walk-ins are welcome.
Donation locations and hours are available online. Follow the Carolina Clemson Blood Drive on Instagram @uofscblooddrive for updates and more information.
Clemson Car Smash — Nov. 19
Need to take some stress off your shoulders? Stop by Swearingen Engineering Center, where Theta Tau, USC Counseling and Psychology services and Gamecock Entertainment will host a smashing event.
You can take a swing at a Clemson-themed car with a sledgehammer and let out some Rivalry Week energy. For more information, visit the event page on Garnet Gate.
Tiger Burn — Nov. 19
The Tiger Burn tradition dates back to 1902, when USC students, celebrating an upset win, displayed a banner of a Gamecock crowing over a defeated tiger. Offended Clemson cadets confronted them, and after staff intervened, both sides agreed to burn the banner — sparking a lasting tradition.
Today, USC engineering students in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers design and build a nearly 30-foot tiger to burn at a pep rally before the Palmetto Bowl, symbolizing school spirit and unity.
“This is my third year being involved,” said Jordan Henderson, president of USC’s ASME chapter. “It’s great to see everyone working together to create this cool piece of art.”
He adds that this year’s new-and-improved design is one for the books.
“On burn day, students can look forward to a super cool tiger and a new design from last year,” Henderson said. “Hopefully a better burn from last year.”
This year’s Tiger Burn will take place at 6 p.m. on Blatt Field.
Rivalry Week swag
Student Government is teaming up with Gamecock Entertainment, Carolina Productions and the Carolina-Clemson Blood Drive Committee to bring a week full of school spirit and free goodies.
Tabling events will be held on Greene Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday (Nov. 17 and 19). Student Government members will also hand out USC merchandise during Wednesday’s Tiger Burn.
Student Government secretary of athletics Sam Feldman says students can expect to grab free tasty treats and Gamecock gear at the tables.
“We will be handing out Duck Donuts on Monday and pizza on Wednesday, along with custom Rivalry Week student merchandise, courtesy of Gamecock Entertainment,” Feldman said. “This will include T-shirts, hats, slap koozies, laptop stickers, Pit Vipers, wristbands, rally towels and more.”
