Scholarships

The School of Journalism and Mass Communications offers departmental scholarships for new and continuing students. This list does not include scholarships awarded by the University. 

Freshmen Scholarships

The School of Journalism and Mass Communications offers a number of scholarships for exceptional freshmen through the SJMC Scholars Program.  Among the criteria considered for these awards are SAT scores, high school grade point average and extracurricular activities.  SJMC Scholars are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve and for their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. The SJMC Scholars Scholarships are renewable for four years as long as the student remains in good standing as a full-time student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

The deadline has passed to apply for the SJMC Scholars Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year.


SJMC Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship

To better serve our underrepresented student population, The SJMC Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship is among those awarded.  We are committed to providing an inclusive environment and we strive to enhance the diversity within our undergraduate population. With this, we hope to see a reflection of that in our industry. Our goal is to provide a diverse experience for our entire student body in hopes to ultimately enrich educational benefits for all.  The SJMC Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship is renewable for four years as long as the student remains in good standing as a full-time student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. 

The deadline has passed to apply for the SJMC Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year.


Continuing Students Scholarships

Current students may apply for departmental scholarships for the next academic year in January. Scholarships are for one-year and are nonrenewable. Awards are made once a year in April for the next academic year.

The deadline to apply for this scholarship for 2017-2018 has passed.


Children of Alumni Scholarships

This scholarship is for children of alumni of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Among the criteria considered for this award are grade point average and extra-curricular activities. This is a one-year, non-renewable scholarship. 


McClatchy Minority Scholarship and Fellowship

This scholarship is awarded to minority continuing students, and graduate students pursuing print/new media journalism careers in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Scholarships and fellowships will be awarded based on need and merit as determined by the school.  This is a one-year, non-renewable scholarship.
