University of South Carolina Safety Policy

The University of South Carolina is committed to providing a safe and healthful environment for our faculty, staff, students and visitors.

The health and safety of every member of the Carolina community are primary considerations in our continuous efforts to prevent, eliminate or reduce conditions and behaviors that could result in injuries or ill health. We further recognize an obligation to demonstrate safety leadership, by maintaining the highest standards and serving as an example to the university community. These standards are detailed in our Carolinian Creed. The University of South Carolina will strive to continuously improve our safety and health performance by adhering to the following policy objectives:

  • Provide a safe and peaceful environment for all students, faculty, staff and visitors, while ensuring safe and reliable access to the university; Law Enforcement and Safety - Crime Prevention
  • Develop, implement and improve programs and procedures to assure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and other requirements. Take appropriate action to prevent and correct hazards or conditions that endanger the environment and the health and safety of the university community; Environmental Health and Safety
  • Enhance student success by providing a wide spectrum of high-quality, integrated healthcare services, including physical and emotional health services for students and providing for the holistic health and wellness needs of students, faculty and staff; Student Health Services
  • Through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), provide confidential counseling and referral services designed to assist employees and their families in dealing with personal problems; Human Resources - EAP
  • Continue development of a detailed National Incident Management System compliant University Emergency Management Plan; Law Enforcement and Safety - Carolina Alert
  • To provide campus leadership in the study and promotion of Healthy Carolina goals and objectives; Student Health Services - Healthy Carolina
  • Provide essential programs and services that shape responsible citizens and develop future leaders in collaboration with university, community and external partners; Student Affairs
  • Provide a structured positive method for addressing student behaviors that impact the university community and may involve personal safety issues; Behavioral Intervention Team
  • Stand up for other individuals' rights by preventing interpersonal violence; Stand up Carolina
  • Communicate the expectation that every member of the Carolina community will follow this policy and report health or safety concerns to university management; President's Office
  • Practice personal integrity, respect the dignity of all persons, respect the rights and property of others, discourage bigotry and demonstrate concern for others as detailed in our Carolinian Creed.
  • Provide safe and reliable access to our campus, including parking and shuttle programs
