Bio

Background: J. Michael Wattenbarger, M.D. is a board certified pediatric orthopedic surgeon who has served as Chief of Staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville in South Carolina since February, 2015.

Prior to his arrival in Greenville, South Carolina, Dr. Wattenbarger was part of Miller Orthopedic Clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he served in many leadership roles, including treasurer and president. He was president of Miller Orthopedic Clinic when it merged with Charlotte Orthopedic Specialists, forming OrthoCarolina – now one of the largest orthopedic groups in the country. He served as co-president of OrthoCarolina and was instrumental in leading many of the strategic initiatives which helped make the practice the successful, vibrant clinic it is today. Included in his role was real estate strategy, development of ancillary income streams, and the creation of policies which helped integrate multiple practice types and models.

While in Charlotte, he also served as Administrative Chief of Orthopedics at Carolinas Medical Center as well as Academic Subsection Chief of Pediatric Orthopedics at Carolinas Medical Center.

Dr. Wattenbarger received his Medical Degree from University of Texas Southwestern; he completed his residency at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; his Fellowship was with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

Research interests include basic science work on physeal fractures and the formation of physeal bars. He received a POSNA grant for work in this area and has published numerous papers on the topic.

Dr. Wattenbarger’s special interests are in pediatric scoliosis and spinal reconstructive surgery. He also practices general pediatric orthopedics including cerebral palsy, clubfoot, myelomeningocele, skeletal dysplasia and other congenital deformities. Before his arrival at Greenville Shriners Hospital, Dr. Wattenbarger was included in Charlotte Business Magazine’s “Top Doctor” list consecutively from 2008-2013.
