UofSC Student Government named top SEC student government

Earlier this summer, a group of 10 student delegates from the University of South Carolina attended the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Exchange. This annual conference provides an opportunity for student leaders from 14 institutions to build relationships and foster collaboration on initiatives of mutual interest. Delegates attended forums regarding sexual assault, campus safety and marketing in hopes of educating other student leaders on how to better their programs and achieve their goals.

At the conclusion of the conference, seven awards were presented during a closing banquet. The University of South Carolina Student Government was honored to receive two of the seven awards; Best New Initiative, for CarolinaBeYOUtiful, and Best Student Government.

“CarolinaBeYOUtiful originated from something deeply personal for me,” said Mills Hayes, former student body vice president and the creator of CarolinaBeYOUtiful. “Realizing that other people, especially in college, struggle with the same thing made me feel not so alone. There was this shared connection between all students who have struggled with not feeling good enough. It was powerful to watch people come together and lift each other up.

“Of course, it’s amazing to win this award," Hayes said, “but the true payoff was seeing how inspired students were to love themselves if even just for a week.”
