Taught by: Professor Van Kornegay and Dr. Andrea Tanner
Dates: May 10 - 25, 2021
This is a 3-credit hour SCHC course that fulfills your Honors Beyond the Classroom or Honors Social/Behavioral Science requirements or an Honors elective.
Reimagine the way you lead and serve others while participating in a 14-day international adventure and immersion into African culture. The goals of the course are to experience, firsthand, some of the challenges facing citizens in Malawi and South Africa, connect with local organizations and engage in meaningful discussions with their leaders, and participate in important service projects in local African communities.
Two UofSC faculty with extensive study abroad experience will travel with approximately 12 Honors students to Malawi, Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world, and to Johannesburg, South Africa, the largest city in South Africa and home to the Apartheid Museum. In Malawi, students will discover the magnificent beauty of the people and the countryside. In South Africa, tour one of the largest cities in the world, Johannesburg, explore important cultural sites, and visit the African Leadership Academy, where young African leaders are trained to address the continent’s greatest challenges and achieve extraordinary social impact.
It will be the experience of a lifetime and will allow students to be immersed in hands-on international service learning and leadership activities while also participating in fun and exhilarating international travel and adventure.
