Introduction to the linguistic component of human cognition. Properties of speech, the organization of language in the mind/brain, cross-linguistic universals, child language acquisition, and aspects of adult language processing. FS: 12/05/2018. CL: 2020.
Notes:
In this course you will be introduced to the broad field of Linguistics, its terminology, concepts, and leading theories. We will also be studying human language - the focus of linguistics - examining how it works and defining characteristics. We will be breaking language down into its component parts to study the deep structures in terms of its sound system, the internal structure of words, the structure of sentences, how we derive meaning, and how languages differ from one another.
