** Restricted to pre-med/nursing/pharm/health majors. Course fulfills US History requirement.**This course will examine several different aspects of the historical development of medicine. The primary focus will be on the creation of modern medical knowledge from 1800 to the present. This will include the European contributions of the 19th century and major American contributions of the 20th century. At the same time, important developments in medical technology such as surgery, anesthesia, x-ray technologies, and others will be reviewed. The historical development and growth of public health will also be examined through the lens of the Demographic and Epidemiological Transitions. Finally, the growth and improvement of medical education from 1800 to the present, and its impact on the creation of a modern medical profession, will be discussed.This course is taught by an MD and is a pre-health/pre-med section.Course can count towards Medical Humanities and Culture minor.
