**Course fulfills US History and Founding Document requirement.**The founding fathers of the American Revolution were deeply immersed in the culture of Greece and Rome. Their ideas of freedom, democracy, a republic, and virtue were derived from their readings of Plato, Cicero, Sallust, and Plutarch. Thomas Ricks' recent book, First Principles, documents this phenomenon. In this class, we will read Ricks' book and the ancient sources on which it was based. The class will be discussion based and will invite students to reflect on the lessons this history has for our own understanding of these key concepts.
