Explore American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) workshops at the SC Assistive Technology Expo. These intermediate-level sessions are scheduled at 9:30 am, 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. Qualified participants can earn 0.3 ASHA CUEs.*

Session 1 (9:30 am - 10:30 am)


AT for Stroke Survivors

Presenter: Rachell Johnson, MCD, CCC-SLP

Join this session to learn about assistive technology apps and devices to help stroke survivors with speech, communication, cognition and more!

  1. Participants will be able to identify areas in which assistive technology can be used to help stroke survivors.
  2. Participants will be able to examine different AAC and therapy resources for communication for stroke survivors.
  3. Participants will be able to create a therapeutic digital toolkit for stroke survivors.

 

Literacy Development: The Heads and Tails of Instruction

Presenter: Rebecca McKenzie Appling, MS, CCC-SLP, EdD

Effective literacy instruction is a two-sided coin. Join the discussion as we "flip the coin" and examine both sides of literacy instruction, curriculum and assistive technology supports.

Presentation Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to discuss the language constructs that support literacy development (i.e., reading and writing).
  2. Participants will be able to state the components of a systematic explicit instructional program that specifically supports students with literacy acquisition challenges.
  3. Participants will be able to increase awareness for assistive technology tools that support literacy instruction particularly for students with an identified learning disability.

 

Session 2 (11:30 am - 12:30 pm)


Empowering Early Intervention SLPs and Caregivers with AAC

Presenter: Michelle Dawson, MS CCC-SLP, CLC

A critically acclaimed Podcaster will equip participants with research based functional resources and strategies for AAC implementation while also debunking commonly held myths surrounding AAC.

Presentation Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to describe three common barriers with regards to implementing augmentative and alternative communication in early intervention.
  2. Participants will be able to describe three strategies to overcome the barriers to implementing augmentative and alternative communication in early intervention.
  3. Participants will be able to describe three functional ways to implement augmentative and alternative communication into daily routines for pediatric patients in the context of early intervention.

 

Session 3 (1:30 pm - 2:30 pm)


Breaking down funding barriers in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Presenters: Sharon Steed, MS, CCC-SLP and Kelly Caldwell, MA, MS, CCC-SLP
Room Location: Richland B&C

This session will simplify the process for writing AAC funding requests for all ages from submission of initial packet to responding to deferrals/denials. The content of an AAC letter of medical necessity (LMN) for Medicaid or Medicare, deferral/denial addendums and other changes since Covid-19 will be reviewed.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the main sections of a letter of medical necessity.
  2. Describe the important points to complete funding addendums/deferrals/denials.
  3. Describe changes in funding processes since Covid-19.

 

SCATP 101

Come meet our new program manager and learn about the programs and services provided by SC Assistive Technology Program (SCATP). You will learn about equipment demonstrations, equipment loans, the reuse service, the equipment exchange and trainings and workshops. You will be able to participate in a Q&A session following the presentation.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe SCATP's programs and services.
  2. Learn about upcoming trainings and workshops.
  3. Obtain answers to frequently asked questions about SCATP's programs and services.
