Walk with a Future Doc Monthly Event

SOMG is inviting the community to participate in a monthly and free walking event organized by medical students.

The monthly Walk with a Future Doc event encourages Lifestyle Medicine within the community. This medical-student- and doctor-led walking group is a fun and safe place to go for a walk, learn about health and meet new friends. The event is free and all are welcome.

According to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking is low impact and easier on the joints than running. It is safe — with a doctor’s okay — for people with orthopedic ailments, heart conditions, and those who are more than 20% overweight. In addition, research has shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour of regular exercise! That quick stroll around the block is great for your health.

Walk with a Future Doc is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle.

Walk with a Doc (WWAD) is a national organization, which was started in 2005 and is an initiative of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Called Walk with a Future Doc, a USC School of Medicine Greenville (SOMG) chapter was started three years ago as an effort by the Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group at SOMG to encourage Lifestyle Medicine within the community.

The Greenville chapter of WWAD is organized by USC School of Medicine (SOMG) medical students; it is USC SOMG affiliated and run by the USC SOMG Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group.

It is a great way for medical students, physicians, patients and residents to build relationships.

Liz Lofurno, second-year medical student at the School of Medicine Greenville and event leader.

The chapter meets the third Saturday of every month at 10 am. The group meets across the street from the Cleveland Park Animal Hospital and walks on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Parking is at 126 Woodland Way Greenville, SC 29601. The group walks for about 20 minutes before turning around to head back to the meeting spot.

The Walk with a Doc program was started in Columbus, OH in April of 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir and has now expanded throughout the world. You don’t need any special gear and there are no special rules. Our walking groups are a safe, fun, and FREE place to get some steps, learn about health, and meet new friends.
