2018 Garnet Apple Award Nominations Are Now Open

The Office of the Provost is pleased to continue the Garnet Apple Award for Teaching Innovation. This annual award honors the University of South Carolina's most exceptional faculty who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to best teaching practices and an ongoing record of developing innovative strategies to enhance student learning in their courses.

Inspiring a New Generation of Sustainability Leaders Through the Classroom will explore how educators can utilize their unique role to inspire, inform and train today's students to become tomorrow's sustainability champions.

Globalizing Your Course

This fall, the CTE is collaborating with International Student Services (ISS) and Global Carolina to host numerous events and opportunities in conjunction with International Education Week (IEW), November 13 - 17, 2017. An important component of USC's mission is to increase students' knowledge of global connections, issues, and cultural awareness, to be responsible and successful citizens in today's globally integrated world.

3Ds Bootcamp: A Workout in Online Course Development

The Center for Teaching Excellence has awarded eight USC faculty members grants to participate in the inaugural session of the grant cohort "3Ds Bootcamp: Design, Develop, and Deliver an Online Course." Offered with support from the Office of the Provost, the goal of the 3Ds Bootcamp is to equip faculty members with the skills they need to launch a top-notch online course.

GSTO 5th Cohort Graduates

CTE is pleased to announce the fifth cohort of "Getting Started Teaching Online" graduates. Offered with support from the Office of the Provost each semester since Spring 2015, this intensive eight-week online course introduces faculty members to distributed learning pedagogy, best teaching practices, and USC resources related to online teaching.

Transforming Astronomy

Professor David Tedeschi and Assistant Professor Steven Rodney, as primary instructors for Introduction to Astronomy, had used active learning methods in teaching the course but saw they could do more and do it better, including applying evidence-based pedagogy. The Teaching Innovation Grant for Course Transformation, awarded by the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) with support from the Office of the Provost, offered the perfect opportunity to obtain support in revamping the course.

Carolina Core Online

With support from the Office of the Provost, CTE invited full time faculty at the USC Columbia or the Palmetto College campuses to submit proposals for the development of exemplary Carolina Core courses for online delivery. Four proposals were selected to receive Carolina Core Online: Teaching Innovation Grants in Distributed Learning Course Development for the 2016-2017 school year.

Leadership Across Disciplines

The University of South Carolina's inaugural Leadership Week has showcased and celebrated student leadership with a focus on spreading the idea that a spark of leadership can be ignited within each of us. To cap off Leadership Week, the Center for Teaching Excellence interviewed Kirk Randazzo, former director of the Carolina Leadership Initiative.
