Professor Susan Richardson was recently featured on ABC Columbia's news reporting on her pool water research. The interview focused on the affect that pool water can have on people's health. The combination of the chlorine in pool water with urine (which includes sweat) produces a chemical by-product called trichloramine. This chemical by-product is formed in the pool, but is immediately released into the air and can cause respiratory issues. In the interview, Richardson advises people to shower before and after going in a pool. To watch the full interview, consult the ABC Columbia article.
