Take a chill pill

Don't let the stress of finals burn you out; try some of the brain-break ideas

Halfway through finals and feeling the heat? While it’s easy to let the pressure get to you, it’s important to remember that sacrificing your mental or physical health to make the grade isn’t worth it. At the end of the day, a person is more than what their final grade or GPA reads.

However, to help you do your best this week, we’ve compiled a list of brain-break activities so you can finish strong.

Work it out

To get out some anxious energy, release endorphins and get a mental boost, hit the gym. Campus Recreation is holding free Group X classes all week, so you don’t need a spring semester pass to break a sweat. If organized exercise isn’t your thing, catch some sun — with the protection of sunscreen — while studying by the pool. Just make sure your notes or rental textbook don’t get wet.

Take a walk

Let’s be honest, sometimes locking yourself in the subterranean library can feel stifling. Take a break and walk around the Horseshoe or the South Carolina Statehouse or, better yet, stroll along one of the three riverwalks nearby. Don’t like bugs or humidity? Peruse the aisles of the above-ground Richland Library or enjoy the Jackson Pollock mural at the Columbia Museum of Art (student admission is only $5).

Mindfulness Central

The Student Health Center holds mental health in high regard and has regularly scheduled stress management activities throughout semester. Stop by the C.A.L.M Oasis on the second floor for some guided meditation or a yoga session. If you’re really missing your pet from home and need some puppy loving, visit Indy, the official UofSC therapy dog.

Relax at Russell

Can’t find a seat in Thomas Cooper Library? The Russell House has opened up all study rooms for finals and has free printing and copying services the entire week. You also will find free snacks, puzzles and bubble wrap (you know, popping it releases tension).
