SMART summer mentorship funding program applications due Friday, June 3

The Office of the Vice President for Research encourages faculty members who plan to mentor under-represented minority students conducting research projects this summer to apply for SMART funding. Through this program, UofSC faculty (all campuses, all disciplines) who mentor under-represented minority students during the summer receive a supplement of $1,000 per student, for up to two students. This support can be used toward summer salary for the mentor (faculty member, postdoctoral fellow or graduate student), research costs and/or salary for the under-represented minority undergraduate student. Register Now: SC INBRE to host Academic Leadership and Career Development Workshop in June

Registration is now open for the South Carolina IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) summer Academic Leadership and Career Development Workshop to be held on Monday and Tuesday, June 13 and 14, in Columbia. This workshop is free and offers sessions targeting all levels from high school students through faculty, in any discipline with particular focus on STEMM/NIH and NSF research areas. Innovative, outgoing UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski champions all-hands approach to DEI in STEM

Outgoing University of Maryland Baltimore County President Freeman A. Hrabowski III recently penned an editorial for Science magazine advocating for an all-hands approach to enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the STEM fields. In the article, Dr. Hrabowski shares insights from his time as both a student and an administrator to explain his successful vision for increasing diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM.
