Weekly Research Update Special Edition: Research Dashboards

The New Research Dashboards

The Office of the Vice President for Research is proud to unveil a new set of tools devised to help our research community gain a better understanding of the university’s sponsored awards and research expenditures by sharing the latest data through interactive visualizations including charts, graphs and color-coded tables. The new USC Research Dashboards were developed in partnership with the Office of Institutional Research, Assessment and Analytics using Tableau data visualization software. The two new Research Dashboards, launched on Monday on the Office of the Vice President for Research website, offer a variety of visualizations on two key indicators of research success, sponsored awards garnered by USC researchers and expenditures made by the university in the pursuit of research.

Sponsored Awards Dashboard

The Sponsored Awards Dashboard is updated monthly to display the latest on incoming grants and other sponsored awards received by researchers throughout the USC system. It provides customizable graphs and charts detailing incoming funding from USC’s federal, state, local and private funders. Compare data from different points in time or funding for different purposes, track overall funding or zoom into the data by campus and college using the Sponsored Awards Dashboard.

Research Expenditures Dashboard

The Research Expenditures Dashboard is updated each year with data on USC’s research expenditures. Drawing from the annual National Science Foundation Higher Education Research and Development Survey (NSF HERD Survey), the Research Expenditures Dashboard offers a high-level view of USC’s research spending. With data on both federal and non-federal research expenditures, this dashboard displays research spending trends over time and by source, including a breakdown of top federal sponsors.

Enhancing Research Resources at USC

“The Office of the Vice President for Research has always offered clear and helpful data on USC’s research enterprise through our Office of IT and Data Management, and we see this as an enhancement to that important function,” said USC Vice President for Research Julius Fridriksson. We are excited to share these new data visualization tools to help our research community gain a better understanding of our institution’s research strengths and strategize new ways to make it even stronger.

Happy Holidays to the USC research community

The Weekly Research Update will be on hiatus for the holiday season from December 22, 2022 to January 12, 2023. The Office of the Vice President for Research would like to extend a thank you to every member of the USC research community for an outstanding year. It is because of the exceptional faculty members, supportive staffers, postdoctoral and student scholars at every level that our research community is so robust and vital. We wish each of you a happy holiday season and a wonderful and strong start to the new year.
