Are you compassionate? Do you enjoy helping other people? Do the concepts of inclusivity and accessibility of education matter to you?
Whether you are someone changing careers or already a certified teacher, you can complete a Special Education degree. The Special Education programs at the University of South Carolina are designed for anyone who wishes to get involved with helping students with disabilities.
Your Course Work
You will be able to choose from one of four areas of specialization: learning disabilities, emotional behavioral disorders, intellectual disabilities, and cases involving severe or multiple disabilities.
Your Career
Choosing a degree in Special Education does not mean that you are resigning yourself to a career in front of a chalkboard, or even within the walls of a school. Other opportunities to have a positive impact on the lives of people with special needs abound, including physical and occupational therapy, assistive technology specializations, and counseling.
Of course, being a Special Education classroom teacher has its own rewards- the material reward having a specialized set of skills in an in-demand industry, as well as the emotional reward of making differences in the lives of people who might otherwise not have the same opportunities that many of us do.
