Adopted: November 16, 2022
The duty of the School of Music Faculty Awards Committee shall be to review applications for internal USC and SOM annual awards that require nominations, including but not limited to: the SOM Cantey Outstanding Faculty Award, Carolina Trustees Professorship, the Garnet Apple Teaching Award, the Mungo Teaching and Distinguished Professor Awards, Breakthrough Awards (Stars, Graduate, Leadership), the USC SEC Faculty Achievement Award, the USC Educational Foundation Outstanding Service Award, and the Russell Research Award.
The Faculty Awards Committee will be composed of a minimum of five full-time, tenured/tenure-track individuals, with at least one from each major area in the SOM (ensembles, applied, academic) and two additional members. Committee members shall be appointed by the dean and serve a two year term on the Awards Committee with the chair having been a previous member of the committee to preserve institutional memory. Committee members cannot nominate themselves or others on the committee, but may be nominated by faculty, staff, or students outside the committee. In the case of outside nomination, said committee member should recuse themselves from discussions.
Members on the committee will serve a two year term, and can be re-appointed one time for two concurrent terms. After a minimum of one term away, members may rejoin the committee. To support continuity and organization, terms of the committee will be rotated, so that at least one member is always serving in their second year. In the case of a sabbatical, the dean will appoint a replacement committee member from the same area if possible. The committee will keep a running spreadsheet of award nominations and successful applications. The committee shall have access to nominees’ CVs and student and peer teaching evaluations as needed and will meet at least one month before award deadlines.
